Hey all,

I was recently facebooked (yes I am part of the 21st century and yes I just used 'facebook' in its past participle form although I had to google 'past participle' just to be sure... there I go again, 'google' as a verb! I might even be 22nd century at this point)... where was I? Oh yeah, I was recently facebooked by an anonymous concerned citizen. They hadn't heard of FeelGood before being contacted by a mutual friend in an effort to gain votes for the Chase Community Give which FeelGood won $20,000 for! Anyway, the individual was quite disappointed by their initial review of FeelGood and asked me to explain a few things to bring clarity to the situation. The following is my conversation which I think everyone might find helpful when faced with a 'concerned citizen':

Dear Jason,

I voted for FeelGood to win its $20,000 because a friend, whose judgment I respect and trust, invited me to. Congratulations!

I just checked out your website, however, and to be honest I'm pretty disappointed.

My first question is this: what exactly does FeelGood do? Like actually DO on a day-to-day basis? Your descriptions of your activities are vague and rhetorical at best and hypocritical at worst.

For example, this is from the "How to End Hunger" page: "Conventional ways of thinking about hunger treat hungry people as the problem. The cliché – “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day – teach a man to fish and you feed him for life” - is not only wrong, it is damaging. Hungry people have generations of wisdom about “fishing” – the problem is the barbed wire around the lake."

Then on the "Our Partners" page, it says one partner has "has enabled the self reliance of over 3,000,000 million people". What does that mean? "Enabled the self-reliance" is vague and rhetorical. If that partner actually DOES something, say what it does.

The other partner "works with motivated villages teaching communities to be self-developing". Isn't that "teaching a man how to fish"? If it's not, how is it different?

My other question is, why sell grilled cheese? It has an extremely high salt content, it's processed, and dairy products (especially cheese) are bad for the environment! It's not sustainable at all, as FeelGood's site claims, and it's probably something you chose at random and are retroactively trying to justify with no research.

The bottom line is this: I want to know that the $20,000 that FeelGood won would be put to better use than it would at Kiva. Can you very briefly reassure me of this? If not, I think FeelGood should stick to its mission and donate the money somewhere else.

First of all, thanks very much for actually taking the time to provide your thoughts and concerns. I appreciate your intense thinking on the subject and for giving me a chance to clear the air a little...

So I will break up your questions and try my best to answer them specifically.

Q: What does FeelGood actually do on a day to day basis?

A: FeelGood's main function is to operate student run delis on university campuses across the country. These delis, run by student volunteers, primarily sell grilled cheese sandwiches to other students. With each sandwich sale a short window of time is opened to discuss with the buyer a vision and commitment to ending extreme poverty. It is a chance to enlighten the buyer of their commitment through this purchase. We discuss exactly where the money raised goes and the specific steps for how poverty is eliminated. We believe it is just as important to build awareness as it is to raise money. We provide our future leaders, college students, a chance to tangibly get involved in what many view as an intangible and inevitable outcome. We challenge that viewpoint every day on universities across the country and provide the partnering outlet.

Q: What do FeelGood's partner organizations actually do?

A: Well first off, it is important to understand what we have deemed necessary criteria for our partner organizations to fulfill. This includes:

1. Mobilize grassroots leadership

2. Effectively address the deeply entrenched social condition of gender inequality

3. Forge partnerships with local government and organizations

4. Have a proven track record of a cost-effective model for unleashing self-reliance

5. Embrace environmentally sustainable practices

Based on these criteria, we have chosen to partner specifically with two main groups. The Hunger Project and Choice Humanitarian. On our website we have more information about each of these partners (http://www.feelgoodworld.org/cheeseworld/our-partners), but at the end of the day, these partners have their own websites detailing the extent of their work. We would rather not reinvent the wheel by incorporating everything they do on our website so we have provided links. It doesn't take a genius to understand why that is the case. Thus, we have highlighted just a few of the areas of their work that stand out. The Hunger Project, for example, works in Africa to set up Epicenter Projects. These epicenters are the result of a five year process. The first 1-2 years is spent in education of a group of surrounding villages. Indigenous trained leaders run vision, commitment, and action workshops with the villagers to create a plan for how self actualization will occur. Other leaders naturally evolve from within the community with gender equality at the forefront of the discussion. Women gain leadership and partnership through each facet of the community structure, be it co-gendered head of the water committee or of the healthcare committee. Once the villagers commit to a vision of self reliance, they begin work on an actual epicenter building which houses food banks, schools, meeting halls, microcredit banks, healthcare rooms, etc... All 8 areas of the Millennium Development Goals are considered. Once the building is finished and the land around it turned into communal farming (take about a year or so), it only take another 2-3 years for them to be self reliant. This means no more investment dollars from The Hunger Project or groups like FeelGood. That's what our partners do...

Q: Isn't self developing the same thing as teaching a man to fish?

A: Self developing means allowing those in poverty to become the authors of their own development. It means that it isn't a bunch of white folks from the west going over to Africa or wherever to tell them 'This is how you should behave to get out of poverty', but rather that development derives from the indigenous population themselves. Our financing dollars don't go towards providing food for a day, they go to education, workshops, infrastructure, and more. Our goal is sustainability in whatever we do. Poverty is different than famine. Of course some of the work we do has cross over with the cliche of teaching a man to fish, but they know how to do that for the most part. People in poverty are way more capable than most give them credit for. You and I probably wouldn't last past 2 years if we were born into poverty. It is to their benefit to become sustainable so no one will fight harder than them. The problem is the lack of opportunity. The barbed wire around the pond. Work is done with local governments in the workshop phase to make sure there is buy in and realization of the communal benefit of the end result. Sure this isn't always easy, but the numbers we provided should be a source of realization of the success of this approach.

Q: Why sell grilled cheese? Isn't it bad for you?

A: First off, I have seen that Slate article before. It's very well written and quite compelling. Cheese, indeed, can be a highly resource consuming product. But not all cheese is this way. We have gone well beyond your typical grilled cheese sandwich. Breads range from marble rye to 12 grain. Cheese ranges from your typical processed cheese to rice cheese. We have tomatoes, spinach, bell peppers, cucumbers, etc... And at each deli location we work tirelessly to get as many products locally as possible. Sure we aren't being 100% sustainable, but that would mean not selling anything at all. Again, you are quick to jump to conclusions. We have created a number of partnerships with local food/beverage providers including local cheeses which reduces the negative environmental impact. Rather than criticize, I would urge you to be a bit more productive. Please feel free to provide a better alternative. I am extremely open. Could we always do better. ABSOLUTELY! Could you probably do better with your own diet and sustainability? I don't know you, but it's a question we can always ask ourselves and the answer's usually 'yes'. I know I personally can and I try to every day. Maybe that's why I live in a LEED platinum certified home with solar...

Q: Is FeelGood better than Kiva?

A: First off, kind of a silly question. We aren't in the business of putting down other organizations, especially organizations who are trying to do good. I can tell you this that $20,000 invested in FeelGood is WAY better for those living in extreme poverty than investing the same amount in DELL, BP, the government, Blind Cat Rescue, Walmart, and the World Bank. Point being, these could all have major potential benefits (and obvious issues), but we focus on poverty and we are very effective at it. Kiva focuses on loans and is VERY good at it. Microcredit financing is just a piece of our pie. Like I said before, we believe that it is important to address all the reasons for poverty's existence to be successful. This includes all those mentioned in the MDG's. So are we better than Kiva, what does it matter? We have different approaches which make us hard to compare. We are really good at what we do.

Anyway, I hope I have been constructive in answering your questions. I feel bad that you had such a negative first reaction, but would urge you to reevaluate your approach in criticism. You might want to do some more digging before you make such bold negative comments. It's ok to ask these questions, in fact, it's welcomed... I would just consider a slightly altered approach.

Thanks so much for your response. I'm heartened to see that there are people as open-minded and magnanimous in the world as I should have been.

The reason I didn't simply write off FeelGood was because, as I said, someone I respect is a big fan. While my tone may have come off as angry and critical, I want to assure you that it was merely critical. I see critique as an engine that drives improvement, so I hope you weren't offended. It's easy for me to forget how my tone can look on the internet.

You're right that I did not research your partner organizations thoroughly enough. Confirmation bias led me to write off FeelGood very soon after I landed on the website, so I suppose my message to you was not giving you the benefit of as much doubt as it should have.

After reading your comments, I'm happily a FeelGood convert. I think what you're doing is wonderful, well-thought-out, and has a potential for overwhelmingly positive impact. If I understand it correctly, FeelGood is at it's core an educational effort, which I laud. Education is a humanitarian's sharpest weapon, after all.
