Upon waking up from my fourth mini-nap to my second cup of hot tea (bless the flight attendant), I was suddenly compelled to explore the in-flight magazine (called Spirit), hoping to enter 10 to 12 answers in the crossword before drifting back to sleep.

As the universe would have it, not only is the August issue all about sandwiches, but it features an entire article that is one woman’s “love story” with grilled cheese! I immediately begin crafting letters wooing her to the FeelGood mission and courting her as a FG Friend – I mean, if you’re making grilled cheese that often, why not end hunger while you’re at it?

As my brain synapses began to fire more rapidly, I continued paging through Spirit, the very name of which told me more magic awaited. Indeed, minutes later, I found myself wondering “is this a dream?” Check it: THE BUILD A BETTER SANDWICH SWEEPSTAKES.

After spending a joyful, inspired week deeply immersed in FG World preparing for and experiencing the first annual Big Cheese Summer Training Camp, I couldn’t help but think…

“Build a better sandwich? Like one that

* utilizes fresh, local ingredients – ones that are likely chemical/preservative-free, taste like heaven, and pack more nutritional value?
* allows me to support local economy?
* can only be made when I partner with my neighbors?
* is changing the dialogue around our common humanity?
* prioritizes the well being of all life?
* reminds me I really do matter – and so does every human on this planet?
* is truly sating not only my physical hunger, but also my social/spiritual hunger for connection and meaning?
* is an investment in sustainable, gender-focused, empowerment-based development?
* is ending world hunger?!?!?!?!

As we all know, the best (grilled cheese) sandwich ever is one that helps end world hunger! So….are YOU inspired to enter the Better Sandwich Sweepstakes? What if folks flying all over the US were reading about this dynamic, loving, innovative social enterprise? They’d just HAVE to be a part of it.

After witnessing the sheer GENIUS of collective creativity, vision, and wisdom during The Iron Chef Grill Off at camp, I knew I had to put the word out to the FG community about this opportunity. Three incredible teams came up with unique, wholesome, mouth-watering sandwich recipes you should look for in a future blog (hint, hint). What was really impressive is each team chose one cheese and five additional ingredients – not only for their grilled cheese sandwich, but also to make a side dish! I’m not going to lie, I was dubious that this goal was reachable – and they blew my mind!! Dinner was a regular carnival in my mouth and spirit.

Now, I’m not trying to abuse the FG blog and no one at Southwest or Spirit is compensating me for the free publicity. And who knows if the folks running the contest would ultimately agree that world-loving, hunger-ending sandwiches really are the best?

The truth is, this is such an incredible opportunity to spread the word of FeelGood and invite people to consider how their choices around satisfying their own hunger can be powerful enough to change the world? It doesn’t hurt that the grand prize winner gets a trip to NYC including airfare, three nights in a hotel, dinner for two, and a tour of NYC food markets…can anyone say The Hunger Project’s 2010 Fall Event on October 23, 2010??

So, I challenge you – as an individual, chapter, alum, or FG friend – to always strive toward building a better sandwich – and in turn bring forth a thriving, just, and sustainable world.
