Do you know what MDG stands for? No, not Miller Genuine Draft… that’s MGD. MDG stands for Millennium Development Goals. Still don’t know what I’m talking about? Then you probably are new to FeelGood…

Every FeelGooder should know what the Millennium Development Goals are. In fact, you should know them so well that you could more or less rattle off all 8 goals from memory. Why you might ask? Because knowledge is power!

At FeelGood, our work helps to support organizations directly enacting the same principles found in the Millennium Development Goals:

Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Achieve universal primary education

Promote gender equality and empower women

Reduce child mortality

Improve maternal health

Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases

Ensure environmental sustainability

Develop a Global Partnership for Development

It is our job as FeelGooders to not only raise money for these efforts, but to raise awareness for them as well. These 8 time-bound goals provide concrete, numerical benchmarks for tackling extreme poverty in its many dimensions.

It is worth reading the entirety of this short article. There were two main points that I got when reading this. As seen in the charts three quarters of the way down the article, we have yet to reach any goal completely, yet we have made significant strides in certain areas. While it looks like there is no way for us to achieve all the goals by 2015, the stated year for completion, we are still making progress.

The second most important point learned was listening to development economist Jeffrey Sachs’ audio recording at the end of the article. While I think you should listen to the whole recording, at minute 4:30 he is asked about the lack of education of the goals in the US vs. the rest of the world. Because of this, there isn’t enough political support for policy driven efforts to achieve these goals. It is for this reason that we NEED to keep doing what we are doing. Our grassroots efforts are the exact kind of support needed to enhance this movement.
