Leah Grossman and I participated in the 16^th annual Swedish Summerun this past weekend. This is an annual fun run/walk to raise money for the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. Each year a woman who is battling ovarian cancer is picked as the honoree of the event. This year it was a woman named Leslie. Last year it was a woman named Lisa. The year before it was a woman named Mary Anne. The simple act of empowering an individual and honoring these women inspires incredible results. Each year the number of participants and money raised keeps rising. Lisa and Mary Anne lost their battles with ovarian cancer, but their friends and family are still fighting, if not even harder now, to find a cure for the next generation of women. This year’s the honoree Team Leslie, in combination with Team Lisa’s Angels and Team Mary Anne raised over $70,000 and inspired over 400 people to participate in their honor. This is only part of the whole, there were another 30 survivors and in total over 3600 people participating in the event, raising over $426,000 for ovarian cancer research this year.

The reason I think this event is so powerful is because it inspires individuals to give their part of the whole. It gives family members and friends the ability to act when they often feel helpless. And it gives women fighting cancer hope to be surrounded by other survivors, family members, friends, doctors, and complete strangers who want to find a cure for their disease.

The money from these runs is making a difference. Groundbreaking research is happening with funds from large organizations, but also from fundraising events such as these. Over the years incredible improvements have been made in the battle against cancer, however the cure has not yet been found.

Much like the fight to end world hunger, progress has been made, but the end of world hunger has not yet been reached. We will get there not only with the large multinationals, governments and foundations involved, but also with the inspired individuals making a difference one grilled cheese at a time.
